I have a lovely vision of my Granda, Micheál Ó’Cathain, sitting at his old fashioned kitchen table (those with the one drawer in the middle for
cutlery!) listening to Radio na Gaeltachta (our Irish speaking radio station) and he’s kneading the bread and very proud of himself that he has begun to bake. His niece gave him the recipe and he must have made this bread every two days! His house was overlooking Dingle Bay and he was a fantastic Irish speaker with the most magnificent Irish blas
(the accent when he spoke his beautiful Irish) and a magnetic personality. I think that this brown bread is going to delight you when you add simply some butter, perhaps a little cheese. Keep it out for next
month’s MyIrelandBox as there are some lovely surprises in there that will go so well with it. This type of Irish brown bread is also made by
many a Galwegian and Aran Islander and it would often be eaten by them with a good seafood chowder.
